This thing is a tank, it's not in any danger of breaking. Another reviewer felt it was over-engineered and gave it a bad rating because of that, I don't agree with his rating, but I can see where he's coming from. The main thing I'd point out is that assembly holds the GPS a fair distance away from the handle bar which may be make or break with you (see video). I'm not sure how much vibration or shock a GPS unit can take, so I would have like to have seen some kind suspension or shock absorption considering it's size.

I've used two other handlebar mounts to secure Garmin GPS devices to my dirt bike's bars. This is the first one that's actually impressed me.
The RAM mount holds the GPS right where you want it with very little vibration.
You can quickly adjust the bracket's arm to position the GPS wherever you want it (almost).
The mount itself (the part that actually holds the GPS) is firm enough to securely hold the GPS with no worries that it might fall out, but it's also really simple to insert and remove the GPS. The top fingers of the mount spread apart with a little pressure and the GPS just slides out (no tools or adjustments required).
My only complaint is that the bracket's arm swivels to any position you want, but once you have it positioned, you can't necessarily rotate the GPS in every direction (tilt up/down, tilt side to side, and rotate clockwise/counterclockwise), so you sometimes have to compromise between the angle of the GPS and... Purchased this product due to the fact that I didn't know what I really needed. The only reason I didn't give this product a 5 star was due to the u-bolt that mounts it to the handle bars wasn't coated with anything, so the handle bars will probable have a scratch when I take it off. The product works great for my Garmin Etrex Legend. I used it for several long rides and it was nice to be able to adjust it to any angle. This is a nice item that works well.

Garmin eTrex Legend HCx Personal Navigator Reviews

Excellent and versatile GPS that I use for geocaching, driving, mountain biking, and hiking. I previously owned the Venture Cx and the display cracked due to my carelessness in the airline luggage. I upgraded to the new Legend HCx with the high sensitivity receiver and this unit significantly outperforms the older units. The new receiver fixes your location much faster and provides much better signal coverage. I noticed this as soon as I turned the Legend HCx on, as I was able to get a fix inside my house.
The expandable memory option (Cx) of the etrex series allows you to store a tremendous amount of map info. I installed the TOPO and City Navigator Mapsets for the entire state of CA and I am able to switch between mapsets. When I am on the trail, I "hide" the other mapsets and "show"/use the TOPO mapset. When driving on the road, I switch to City Navigator to get turn by turn navigation to my destination.
The only cons about the etrex series is that... Read more

I've been using the HCx Legend for about a month now and I've been very, very pleased with it. I use this unit mainly for hiking and backpacking; anywhere from well established trails in state parks to the deep back-country of southern California. This is not a unit I would suggest for use while driving. Maybe in the hands of your navigator, sitting shotgun, but this not a drivers GPS unit in my opinion. For hiking, and some casual Geocaching, it's been an excellent companion and tool.
Some of the things I really like about it are, for one, that the buttons are located on the side of the unit near the top. This becomes particularly relevant when the unit is actually in use IN your hand. Your fingers are at the top, the display is at the bottom and you can manipulate the buttons without your hand blocking the display. This may sound like a minor thing, but it's not.
Another thing I've come to appreciate is it's relatively small size and... well... Read more

This is the second mapping GPS I have owned, and it is nearly perfect for my needs. I can't believe how much better this eTrex Legend is than my old eMap unit. First, the bright color display is clear and readable in direct sunlight. My laptop wouldn't even be visible in those conditions. Battery life - there is no comparison! I haven't yet changed the alkaline batteries in 4 weeks of use (modestly heavy as it is a new toy). Finally, it is so sensitive that it has never failed to get a satellite position while indoors. Again, the HCx is a major improvement over the previous model where I could lose reception inside my car with glass all around and in open countryside.
Pros: Light weight, small size, fits great in one hand. Can be operated completely with one hand. Display is amongst the sharpest and brightest I have ever seen. Very intuitive and simple to use for anyone except possibly a newbie to GPS navigation. Battery life seems endless... Read more

This review applies to many of the Etrex's, not just the Legend. I do field work in the management of natural resources, and we've used a lot of GPS's. The Etrex's are very popular because they are small, easy to use, and cheap enough that people aren't afraid to carry them (vs a $4000 Trimble unit). The Legend in particular gives good bang for the buck because it's the least expensive model that displays very useful maps.
The only problem with the Etrex's (and many other GPS's) is that their lifespan is not all that long. We've had a number of units that go two to four field seasons and then start to break down. The most common failures are in the joystick and with the screen or start-up of the unit. The joystick often starts to lose the ability to move in one or more directions. You need the joystick to move through all the menus, so the problem effectively ruins your control of the unit. The other common problem is that the unit will refuse to start up, or it... Read more

If you are looking for a top notch unit for a lot of serious use in the woods, then look elsewhere.
This is my fourth Garmin in 14 years. When my GPSMap76CS died I had a choice; give Garmin $110 for a refurb GPSMap or buy this new. I chose this unit. I'm a casual hiker & geocacher that didn't need a color display, compass or altimeter. They are good to have, but not necesary. I just need a unit that points me to the next cache or can get me out of the woods when the sun starts to sink a little low
So what's great about this unit? Value. What you get for the money is impressive. The receiver is very good. Even in heavy trees I can lock up 6+ satellites. It holds a lock even when it is hanging from my neck. No wrist strap, it comes with a comfortably long neck lanyard. It has lots of features, many of which I'll never use. It's unlikely you'll need more waypoints & routes than this unit has. Navigating through the screens takes a little getting used to, but is... Read more

I recently purchased this to replace an eTrex Venture that started going fritzy after 7 years of hard use (multiple 10' drops has caused the screen to partially fail).
After a week of hard use, I'm very satisfied with it. The eTrex Legend H has a noticeably better antenna then my old unit and acquires satellites faster. I even used it on several occasions to pick up signal inside heavy concrete structures, although metal (car bodies) still affects it a lot (100'+ off on average). It works very well sitting of the front dash so it has a clear view straight up through the glass similar to the old unit, just not on the middle console or back seat. They have also updated the interface a little bit and its better then it use to be (compared to the old unit), but still not 100% intuitive. Spending 5 minutes with the quick start guide mostly fixes that problem though.
Case Design: The usb only cable is an amazing change over the older eTrex serial plug... Read more
